When Beyonce and Jay-Z had their baby girl earlier this year, heads turned when they decided to name her Blue Ivy. Beyonce is finally giving the world an idea as to why she and Jay decided on the name Blue Ivy in a poem she posted to Tumblr.
The poem was written by Rebecca Solnit, an environmental writer, and talks about the color blue as the earth, ocean and sky.
“This light does not touch us; does not travel the whole distance,” Solnit writes. “This light does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance, the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is is in the color blue.”
Before now, there has been speculation that Blue Ivy’s name holds meaning to her father — blue is Jay-Z’s favorite color and Ivy relates to the Roman numeral IV (or 4), which is the couple’s lucky number.
